History of Midwifery in Turkey

In the nineteenth century, in the big cities of Turkey, such as Istanbul and Izmir, midwifery was performed by famous women. But the first period of midwifery in Turkey began in the year 1848 AD. In 1880, Dr. Basim Omar Pasa, a gynecologist in Turkey, set specific criteria for this field and profession. Despite all these efforts, the first midwifery school under the leadership of Dr. Basim Omar Pasa was established in this country in the year 1909.

The institute accepted female students under the age of 30 who had graduated from various schools in Turkey and offered revised curricula for midwifery. In this school or institute, clinical programs were taught to students in addition to academic programs. The school continued to operate without interruption during World War I. However, the midwives who graduated from the school did not want to take up their duties in Anatolia (outside Istanbul).

In 1920, female students from various cities who had graduated from primary school were sent to Istanbul to receive round-the-clock education. Local municipalities covered tuition fees at the midwifery institute and travel expenses. These midwifery courses in Turkey were initially extended to three years and then to four years. Students between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five were admitted to the institute.

Advanced midwifery education in Turkey

Midwifery training in Turkey, which was previously conducted at various levels, was discussed in the High Council of Health, and it was determined that this training should only be done in universities and undergraduates. The protocol was signed in 1996 between the Ministry of Health and the CHE Department. According to the council’s decision, health vocational high schools that provided midwifery/nursing education have handed over the training process to universities.

Twenty-three health schools and six medical schools in Turkey have been teaching midwives since 2009. The critical role of this profession in supporting and improving the health of mothers and infants in countries is why the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have a unique and ongoing emphasis on “strengthening the education and profession of midwifery.”

After studying midwifery in Turkey, a student is expected to acquire the following knowledge and skills by obtaining a bachelor’s degree at the end of midwifery education:

Perform at least 100 prenatal examinations
Monitor at most minuscule 40 pregnancies
Perform at least forty regular deliveries
Help break one or two deliveries
Monitor forty dangerous pregnancies
Monitoring the condition of 100 mothers and children after natural childbirth
Monitoring fifty children in difficult and dangerous situations
Perform at least twenty-five IUD-related procedures

All of the above are mentioned in the practical and clinical training of the European Union. Therefore, all these things must be observed and done
