6 Things You Should Do Before You Arrive at University in Turkey

Deciding to study abroad is a brave step and the beginning of a journey of intellectual and personal development and growth, so I hope you’re excited about it! However, I understand that moving to a new country and a new environment can be slightly daunting, so we have gathered a few tips to guide you throughout your transition from your home to your new home.

1- Become familiar with your university

This is a simple yet essential step that you can take towards becoming familiar with the university, the campus, the department, the city, etc.

This information is easily accessible with the internet and the rise of social media. Start by surfing the university’s website, go through their facilities that you would like to use, such as the gym, swimming pool, cafeterias, restaurants, libraries, study areas, supermarkets, etc. This way, you will begin to become familiar and aware of what to expect when you arrive at your university. It is also helpful to check the university’s social media platforms as they share snippets of their daily activities and current events in a more casual manner.

Another tip is to surf the web for what the city is famous for, the popular events, activities, and the most used public transportation; This will also help you become more involved and aware of the city and environment you are going to and can drive your worries away.

Some universities in this day and age even offer 360 tours of their campus so you can get the full experience and discover your campus before even getting there!

2- Discover available student clubs, international student clubs

While you’re discovering your university and its facilities, it is also helpful to go through the university’s available student clubs. These clubs are a great way to connect with like-minded people. Universities generally have a great variety of student clubs that host many activities and events throughout the year for their members, and it is an excellent addition to your resume after you graduate or when applying for an internship!

Some universities have a student club for international students, which you can join and connect with fellow international students that can guide you through your journey.

3- Connect with students / International Students

Students are generally eager and willing to help other students; therefore, if you have any questions or want to know more about specific subjects, then try to talk to a student from the same university. If you are a MEDU student, we are more than happy to connect you with international students at your university!

4- Map out Accommodation Options

Your accommodation and its location are just as crucial as your university selection; this will be your home for the next few years; thus, it is vital to map out the possible accommodation options (on-campus accommodation (if available), off-campus dormitory, sharing an apartment, etc.) before you arrive. Once you have shortlisted your options, discover what is nearby from facilities and public transportation routes.

PS: if you’re a MEDU student, we will provide you with all the guidance you need to reach the best decision for you and your budget and help you arrive at your accommodation.

5- Pack the Necessary

I cannot stress this point enough! I have been in your shoes before, and trust me when I say, pack light and the necessary.

I understand that there is an inclination to pack everything in fear of not finding specific items in Turkey. However, packing the necessary will help you easily organize your items and give you the chance to discover new items and products from Turkey!

6- Take your Original documents and certificates

This is one of the most important tips I can give you before arriving in Turkey! Ensure you have all the necessary papers and certificates so that your registration process goes smoothly and quickly so you can enjoy your time exploring the city and university.
